Earnest....

Posted by Kate on May 31, 1998 at 10:01:48:

Back to the LibraryApparently Wilde first wrote Earnest in four acts, but then reduced it to three at the urging of the producer. The original play has been published - apparently the missing act includes Algy being sent to debtors prison!

Act I is full of delicious Wildeisms.
Here are some of my faves....

"The truth is rarely pure and never simple. Modern life would be very tedious if it were either and modern literature a complete impossibility"

"The amount of women [shouldn't that be "number" Oscar??] who flirt with their own husbands is perfectly scandalous....It is simply washing one's clean linen in public"

"I love hearing my relations abused. It is the only thing that makes me put up with them at all"
