In response to Happy marriages, written by Helen on May 29, 1998 at 10:47:39

Back to the Library JA once said that Jane Fairfax was to die in childbirth. That seems to me to be a way of saying that she gets out of the potential unhappiness of her marriage, and that JA thought that Frank needed to grieve a bit in order to become a decent person. JA seems to have had an aversion to pregnancy and childbirth herself, if we are to believe Tomalin.

You are right about the fact that in Ms Austen's reportoire there is only Jane Faifax who is a good character who does not make a sensible match. (Even Charlotte Lucas's marriage is sensible and practical, even happy, within Charlotte's own parameters.Emma Watson was going to end up married, according to JA's family.)

What all this means, I haven't a clue, however.....;-)
