] The marriages that interest me most are the marriages which while not extraordinarily happy, seem to be stable and good: The Philipses, the Middletons, the Harvilles, ect. The couples don't have the same level of friendship the couples in the extraordinary marriages display, yet the are solid and workman-like in contruction. Perhaps having a good marriage and a happy marriage don't always encompass one another.] Thoughts?

I once heard the term "neurotically stable" used to describe marriages that are stable and "work", but that don't facilitate happiness, growth, or mental health. I often think what a brilliant psychologist JA was.
One obvious neurotically stable marriage I can think of is Sir Thomas and Lady Bertram. She's totally passive and dumb but pretty and elegant. He's domineering and cares a lot about appearances. They are made for each other.
