Back to the Library ] I don't think it was actually that rebellious, but I think she was making fun of contemporary literature, in which drama was created by conflict between parents and children - particularly over marriage. I love how one of the characters refuses to marry the spouse chosen for them by a parent, even though he quite likes her, simply because she was chosen.

I really like the idea of JA being the real rebel in the middle of the Romantic era... while everyone around her was swooning and defying their parents all over the place, she was quietly advocating matches made on pragmatic grounds with parental approval... kind of like being the only person in a suit in the middle of the 1970s...
