This story is a HOOT. It starts off so seriously, and then gets progressively more ridiculous. I love the family sitting around discussing whether or not someone has knocked on the door, and whether they should answer it.
As far as links to JA's later fiction is concerned, there are obvious links to S&S and the cult of sensibility. All that desparation, and fainting, and passionate swearing of life long friendship.
