Back to the Library ] But having little beauty, and no dowry, such bad connections on her father's side, being so shy and having such a secluded life, where was she to find any suitor?

] And Edmund was good, interesting and had money; and I think that with Edmund as a husband she will grow in self-confidence, which thing she certainly lacks.

I always admired FP for her strength of convictions. She saw how HC behaved and that he had no real moral fibre. Eventhough he tried to change for Fanny I don't believe he could maintain the high moral ground where Fanny resided. Also the plain fact was that Fanny could never love anyone but Edmund so HC never stood a chance.

The only part of the story I find frustrating is that Edmund takes so long to realise that he's in love with Fanny. He shows poor judgement and suffers dreadfully in his disapointment over MC. I know he grew to appreciate Fanny and loved her very deeply when they got married but I can't help but feel that he was on the rebound. He really only saw Fanny as a sister until the end. I'll be interested to see how they interpret that for the screen. Personally I would love to see Edmund express his love very passionately as the longsuffering Fanny deserves! There is no dialogue between them( as we have with EB and Darcy,AE and CW ) in the book, though there's no doubt about his love for her.

P>S> I felt so sorry for Fanny when her Uncle Bertram tried to persuade her to accept HC and called her ungrateful when all she'd ever done was be loyal and respectful, how painful for her. She could not tell her uncle of her feelings for Edmund and to have her uncle feel badly towards her even for a short while must have been dreadful. I love and admire Fanny so much.Considering her background she was a most excellent girl compared to Maria and Julia Bertram and her aunt could scarcely do without her.
