Back to the LibraryI thought Mary was a bold indictment, even for JA. She didn't seem to want to show much mercy.

I know it's all meant to be funny (and it is very much so), but I can't help but wonder how much of the mercenary negotiation, haggling, greed, and so on that she associates with marriage actually did bother her.

Did JA just look on the Marys of this world as part of the social fabric she also shared--certainly there, and perhaps ripe for ridicule, but not to be worried over--or did she truly despise them? As a realist, she must acknowledge that marriages were often contracts that had little to do with feelings. She obviously doesn't like that, but how much did she hate it?

It's hard for me to tell from the tone...
