On this point, in my copy, Nancy Mitford's comment is
"No writer nowadays (ie 1971) could allow Georgie to do his embroidery and dye his hair and wear his little cape and sit for hours chatting with Lucia or playing celestial Mozartino, without hinting at Boys in the background"
But as she points out, Benson never allows sex to intrude. IMO George is obviously gay - his "amore" for Lucia is part of the image - it suits them both for him to love her from afar and for her to be adored. And there are obviously points where he is as anxious to score points off her as everyone else. It's all part of the facade they have created.
