In response to Austen's spelling, written by Yuri Uceda on May 13, 1998 at 11:34:31

Back to the Library ] Was Austen trying to improve English phonetics, or is she just trying to rhyme with those words?
] greif, veiw, freind, neice, beleive, releived, as in received;
] offence, defence, depence

No, I think the answer lies in the fact that she wrote these stories when she was in her very early teens, and she hadn't really learned to spell! She obviously hadn't been taught the rule that english speaking children have drummed into them everywhere "i before e except after c" !!

It give some support to the school of thought which says not to worry too greatly about a child's spelling as long as they are writing interesting and creative stories - one doesn't really notice the spelling errors, because the stories are so funny!
