How do you recognise a rake? How do you differentiate between someone who is really in love with you and someone who is merely feeding his own ego at your expense? Rakes get their reputation by preying on the innocent.A woman who recognises a rake for what he is almost never becomes his object (at least I cannot think of one who does). Why? Because such a woman cannot be manipulted by him, and he knows it.
Caroline, who doesn't think that Willoughby is a real, full blown rake , just a moral coward who happens to be goodlooking.
