I think modern women have a romantic view of "rake". In Jane Austen's time, this was serious business and a rake was a rake and you avoided him less you lose all accountability and your honor. Nowadays, a girl can only hope to meet a rake, and she giggles... I think the name has metamorphizied (well, you know what I mean!) into something else.
