In response to I cannot make up my mind, written by Constanza on May 09, 1998 at 10:46:48
(Kate) she seems a little more cold and calculating than on first impression.
But I've thought she was cold and calculating from the very beginning and have since modified my view with unabashed admiration for the neatness of her military campaign. In assessing the results, which would be the only important thing in a military campaign, she was highly successful and brought about only that change that her relatives really wanted. I hesitated initially with regard to Aunt Ada because I didn't think that she got what she really wanted, but then changed my mind. Even Aunt Ada was saved from the "I saw something nasty in the woodshed" syndrome. Aunt Ada was now off to enjoy the world and to never again have to think about the nasty woodshed incident. She left to experience beautiful things and people.
Everyone was happy in the end and Flora's interference was responsible. In this way, Flora is the exact opposite of Emma, whose interferences are so off the mark.
(Costanza) Whenever I decide she is really cold and calculating, she does something that makes no sense at all. For instance, she says she wants to reform the Starkadder because she wants to live in a neat place, but no sooner she arranges everythin she leaves.
Flora never says she wants to stay at CCF forever. She doesn't give a precise time, but the cutoff apparently is when she decides who she is going to marry. Remember. She was only going there to achieve her mission, collect info for a book she *might* write when she was 50, and then leave when she figured out who she was going to marry.
I think she believes herself cold and calculating, but deep down she is not. Perhaps she is unable to show her feelings, I don't know.
On this I disagree, she is cold and calculating. Her idea of feelings are probably as trite as the book that rules her life.
As if the coldness had been covered by the comedy.
Yes, this is defintely the case. The humor surrounding every situation here tends to obscure, but it is there.
