(especially when played by Greg Wise ;-)) because he seems capable of loving deeply and it is because of a past sin that he is forced to leave Marianne.
As regards the other rakes (Henry Crawford, Wickham) they are weak irresponsible men. No heroine worthy of JA's would be so silly as to really love that sort of person. JA did not believe in love that was not based upon respect, you cannot respect HC or Wickham; it follows that you cannot love them.
