Well, if you read Bronte's biography you discover that she was very unhappy in a Belgian school almost exactly like the one she is describing in her novel.
And as for anti-Catholic prejudices, well, she was brought up by a Church-of-England Protestant parson who came from Ireland, so could well be doubly prejudiced.
