But CCF was published in 1932, which means Clark Gable must have been very new indeed.

Not really. He definitely was a *star* by then. His film career goes back to the mid-20s. In 1931, he must have been on every theater screen in America because the IMDB shows he was in 13 films released in that year!! I relooked at the titles and a couple hit a nerve. He starred with some of the greatest leading ladies at the time. Gary Cooper should be about the same. He started out in silent films, I think.

I think SG picked the biggest box office stars at the time and had Neck look for their successors.
