] "Flora had supposed from impressions gathered during her wide reading, that it was customary to speak only in whispers in a building devoted to the act of worship."

] It follows that her experience of churches is derived solely from reading. And she is to marry a clergyman!
On the face of it, I agree. But, on the other hand..........................
No, I was amazed to find people TALKING in church in the 1970's in England, I was brought up in the '50s' in the RC tradition in England and in weekly visits to church one did not speak above a whisper, and then only if absolutely necessary! The Cof E churches I occasionally went into were the same. I think talking may have been a free church thing. They do chat in Cof E churches now, I don't know about RC.

She may have been widely reading while IN church....the 'exclusive education' she had would have certainly included CofE services on a regular basis!
