A "virtual" view...

] The two I'm trying to choose between are Laura Esquivel's "Like Water for Chocolate" and Isabelle Allende's "House of the Spirits". It's ages since I've read either and I'm worried that the Allende might be a bit long. I'd appreciate your views.
Both sound interesting... and both have been made into films so it would be nice to combine the read with a virtual view in time-honoured fashion: the critical consensus is that "Like Water for Chocolate" makes a jolly good film, while "House of the Spirits" is awful... not of course that our choice of reading should be dictated by Hollywood, but it's a consideration...
