] It's Englishness I'm afraid. Flora disapproves of those characters who lead 'a rich and interesting' emotional life (i.e. lack self-control). Displaying one's feelings simply isn't 'done', neither is being too clever or artistic or successful!

] Of couse this book is poking fun at Flora, too, in that detachment....I love the way it works on so many levels.


Yes, Paulina, I have to remember that in this parody by Stella Gibbons, Flora is being parodied, too. The English reserve is taken to an extreme and parodied. Probably also parodied is the efficient hero or heroine of many books who neatly solve problems and tie up all the loose ends.
Otherwise, the idea of a 19 year old knowing what's better for everyone else and being able to effect the right changes would be ridiculous.
