A pleasing review...

Back to the LibraryThis is from the US magazine, New Republic, the May 4 issue. The author is an Oxbridge don, Richard Jenkyns; I forget his college.

He reviews two new biographies, Tomalin's (thumbs up) and Nokes (thumbs down), saying that Tomalin's is written "with sense and sensibility." :)

I also liked the line (perhaps not original with him?) that JA "has possibly given pleasure to more men in bed than any woman in history."

Then, beyond the two biographies, he goes off into the kind of pleasing ramble of opinion about JA's various characters that we all like to conduct here. A nice read.
