In response to Flora's detachment, written by Kay on April 30, 1998 at 12:39:47

] I find a certain detachment in Flora that's a little repellent.

It's Englishness I'm afraid. Flora disapproves of those characters who lead 'a rich and interesting' emotional life (i.e. lack self-control). Displaying one's feelings simply isn't 'done', neither is being too clever or artistic or successful!
One should be firm, calm, confident and cool, one may also be 'managing' as Flora is in her public life, to be otherwise is to be a social embarassment. :0)
However, she approves of private passion, her own and Elphine's.
Flora foresees a race of practical farmers with poetry in their souls as the issue from Elphine's marriage. No, not cold...English :0)

Of couse this book is poking fun at Flora, too, in that detachment....I love the way it works on so many levels.
