Back to the Library ] It's hard to say whether Stella's views changed of if with the casual anti-Semitic remarks she was trying to accurately portray and certain class of people in a certain time in history. Anyway, I can understand that the remarks are upsetting, (especially since we all like to see authors that we like as having similar views as ourselves), but since they are not central to the book's story, they are hardly enough to spoil my enjoyment of it.

I agree about the not spoiling my enjoyment part... But I did find it interesting that this aspect of her writing, which makes us wince, clearly dates her. It would be impossible to be so casual about it post WW2 without some form of explanation.

Funny that there is nothing in JA which makes me feel quite so uncomfortable, though written so much earlier. Perhaps it's because Stella seems to be writing so much closer to our period that we cannot write off her sensibility as simply an historical oddity, particularly in hindsight!
