In response to The Higher Common Sense, written by Arnessa on April 27, 1998 at 20:59:48

Back to the Library Speaking of psychobabble, what to make of Flora's preoccupation with The Higher Common Sense by the Abbe Fausse-Maigre?... But is Gibbons trying to say that with all these psychoanalysts teaching people about abnormal behavior, that people needed someone to teach them how to be normal.

I didn't take The Higher Common Sense book as necessarily a parody of psychoanalysis. Not knowing what was griping popular culture at that time, I just laughed at the incredibly trite truisms that were espoused in the book. It reminded me of all the silly self-help books that are out there. However, sometimes it takes codification and publication for people to even recognize the merits of common sense.
