Back to the Library ] It looks like that SG had an habit for using "her" as the neutral form; so far I detected two occurrences, but perhaps there are more.

] "Why has not -(whichever member of the family was absent from table)- come in for her food?"

] "...or fixin' one of them wi' my eye to read her thoughts"

] And speaking of gender, it amazes me how she manages to tell us about Flora's going to the cinema with a friend, without disclosing "her" sex. It would have been utterly impossible in Spanish!


I think Gibbons was more one of those women who say, 'I'm not a feminist but...' then list the feminist advantages.
