It looks like that SG had an habit for using "her" as the neutral form; so far I detected two occurrences, but perhaps there are more.
"Why has not -(whichever member of the family was absent from table)- come in for her food?"
"...or fixin' one of them wi' my eye to read her thoughts"
And speaking of gender, it amazes me how she manages to tell us about Flora's going to the cinema with a friend, without disclosing "her" sex. It would have been utterly impossible in Spanish!
