I had trouble realizing that Elfine was Seth's and Reuben's sister until just before the party. At first I thought she was Adam's daughter (and I had that impression when I saw the movie). But then it mentioned Elfine's name as "Starkadder" and later mentioned that Adam had no children. It took me some time to place Elfine. I'm still trying to figure out Rennet ('She'm own daughter to Michah's Susan by her first marriage. Her marriage to Mark, I mean. . .' [Harkaway])

I didn't realize that she was their sister until I read the book, and I had always wondered why, in the movie, Adam doesn't walk her down the aisle. I'm glad I'm not the only one confused!
