I can understand that some people react in a negative way when they see BBC's old adaptation of Northanger Abbey, at least at first viewing. But personally I think it is an interesting adaptation. It is really daring and different, and I think that alone is worth some credit.
Northanger Abbey, the novel, is highly satirical which is very difficult to transform to the screen. The satiric effect must be created by very different means than in the book. I think the adaptation shows an inventiveness that is really rather interesting. The film has a surreal feeling to it that helps to bring out the satire. It is also nice to see an adaptation that is not completly tied up in an attempt to be 'authentic'. An adaptation is about making a film with its own artistic integrity after all, not an attempt to recreate history.
For those of you that think that the film is too horrible I can tell you that Andrew Davies has been asked to write a new adaptation, and that he was seriously considering it when I spoke to him in January. So we can only hope.
