I don't think anyone has mentioned Mary Webb, who wrote rustic novels like Precious Bane and The Constant Nymph... lots of gloom and dark village secrets....
I must admit that one of the reasons I don't like CCF very much (don't shoot me, please ;-) ) is that a lot of the literary things she is parodying have become obsolete, so that the point of them is lost and the book becomes obscure.
