time in which it is set....

I found the timing of CCF quite interesting. Gibbons says in a little note at the beginning, "The action of the story takes place in the near future". It was first published in 1932.
Mrs Smiling has to go an check out a bra which is "a variation on the Venus design made by Waber Brothers in 1938" which is presumably at least a couple of years before the present.
So the book is set smack bang in the middle of WW2! Such are the dangers of writing science fiction!
This leads to a few interesting things. The name of the plane in one I've never heard before (presumably made up) as appear to be the names of the movie stars Seth lusts after. And he refers to the movies as "the talkies" which I think they had long ago stopped doing by the forties, though in 1932, the "talkies" were very new.
Any other anachronisms people have spotted?
