I was very confusing. I meant that she TELLS us that his books are not funny (he doesn't exist, she's invented him, but she's obviously modelled him on Lawrence et al). But she laughed at his books (read: Lawrence et al) all the same because she thought they were funny anyway.
He's definitely fictional. She just made him up. And having made him up, she created a canon for him.
