Cold Comfort Farm - PBS adaptation, latest film, and novel

Soooooooo many years ago - I was a teenager - I'm 41 now - I sat in front of our television and watched a version of Cold Comfort Farm on the local PBS station and fell in love with a charming story. A few years later I came across the novel on a library shelf and had a good read, remembering that PBS experience made it it even better. And, in fact, my mother and I spent years looking for a video of that old version to no avail. I was so pleased when a film was made. Last summer I rented the video for the latest film version of the story and was bored out of my wits. I fell asleep. My question is: Have my tastes really changed so much in the 25 or so years since I first watched Cold Comfort Farm or was the most recent version a poor example? Perhaps I just need to tough it out and stay awake to get the full 'picture'. Please, somone let me know if I need to re-rent the video.
