I'm in the Possession Obsession group and would love to reread it en masse. However, here are some other ideas:

The Forsyte Saga
(all of the above dovetail into Austen as they futher explore the society of the 19th century, ending with Galsworthy's scathing attack on the Victorians)

Contemporary:
Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood
(a fictional account of a famous 19th century murder in Canada. Hey Canadians...how about it?)
