Settled

Back to the Library ] I have to confess I breathed a sigh of relief when Jane & Co finally settled in Chawton. It must have been awful to be moving around all the time, never knowing quite where you'd be going next, and dependent on some male relative to be going at the right time for you.

Oh, I quite agree! How dreadful to have to be so dependant to have no say in such an important and basic issue as where one lives! And it does seem that our four ladies, once settled, made a very cosy and pleasant home for themselves.

] It is also a relief for Jane finally to get published. It is incredible that she waited SO LONG for this, and then all the books came out in a rush.

I'm sure she must have been despairing of it ever happening.

I've heard many people referring to JA's genius lately... I wonder if Jane thought of herself in that way, if she knew that she and her writing were something special. I don't believe that her family and contemporaries thought she was. Can one really only be recognized as a genius in their field after standing the test of time? I know many people are declared "geniuses" now but I think that term is bandied about much too loosely...
