Was Jane's "lost love" her opposite?

Back to the LibraryCaroline,

I enjoyed reading your comments. They sound logical to me.

This discussion of Jane's personality is really interesting. I agree with your conclusion that Jane may have been very similar to Mr. Darcy (aloof due to shyness) and therefore hard to get to know.

It's interesting to me, that JA often "pairs" her shy heros/heroines with outgoing personalities like Elizabeth Bennett/Mr Darcy, Jane Fairfax/Frank Churchill, Anne Elliot/Frederick Wentworth. It often takes this sort of personality to get past the "wall of reserve". I am a reserved person and that's true for me. I love being around people like Admiral Croft who are my exact opposite.

I personally believe that if Jane did have a "lost love", he was probably someone with this type of friendly, outgoing, cheerful personality type (Admiral Croft/Bingley/FW/Frank Churchill). If Persuasion is at least semi-autobiographical and FW is similar to Jane's "lost love", this would somewhat support my theory. Sorry if I'm rambling. I didn't mean to say so much.

I am a quiet, observant person, and am very comfortable around this type of personality. Many of my closest friends are outgoing. We are a good match because they like to talk and I enjoy (am very content) listening. They don't mind -- aren't intimidated -- by my quietness.
