] If you had taken time to get to know this site and this board, you would know that we are reading to a schedule which is posted at the top of the board under the cryptic title of "reading schedule."
] If you had continued to read the posts, you would have seen that we feel able to differentiate between fact and opinon.
] I think that your assumption that Jane Austen would be mortified at Claire Tomalin's interpretation of her flirtation with Tom Lefroy is no different in character from her interpretation of sexual vulnerability.
] We are not all dunderheads taking every word at face value as you seem to imply. Please do not feel obliged to save us from ourselves.
You have completely misunderstood me. I was in no way trying to save you from yourself, and certainly don't consider anyone a dunderhead. I finished the book only four days ago. I will confess that my longstanding affection for Jane Austen is so great and my respect for her gift so profound, that upon finishing the book I felt almost indignant. I felt that Ms. Tomalin had not done her justice. It is unfortunate that it was while in that frame of mind that I wandered into this forum. I did not mean to say that any of you are incapable of separating fact from opinion. I only meant to encourage first time readers of a JA biography to read other accounts as well; to not let their opinions of her rest on this one book. I sincerely apologize to anyone who feels I have spoiled the book for you, and promise to lurk silently, keeping my negative opinions of "A Life" to myself hereafter. (Or at least until you have finished it.) : )
