] I expect replies from people who disagree with my opinion, but I strongly suggest to readers who may be new to Austen biographies that they NOT start with Claire Tomlins inferior account. I implore you to start with "Jane Austen's Letters" compiled and edited by LeFaye.



And indeed I do! ;-) I read the letters long before I picked up a biography, and while Jane's wit and humor shone through, I spent a good deal of the time saying "Who? Where?" They are incredibly hard follow when you don't know who or what she is talking about. I'm looking forward to rereading them after Tomalin, now that I know who the players are! ;-)
