Tomalin has the least to say about this one. The narrator's voice is very strong and humorous. She states that in this it owes a debt to Tom Jones. I haven't read TJ, is it so?

I got a chuckle out the reference to Stella Gibbons:

Jane Austen was using Mrs Radcliff as Stella Gibbons used Mary Webb and DH Laurence, finding their weakest points and through them undermining the whole basis of their work. It is an unfair and deeply enjoyable exercise.

I'm looking forward to the Cold Caomfort Farm group read. ;-)
