I am interested in what assumptions others draw from the available facts and particularly others who have made a thorough study of these facts which I am unable to do. I feel perfectly competent to separate the fact from the analysis and do not feel at all taken in by Ms. Tomalin's conclusions.

I didn't say I felt "taken in." I think most of us reading the book can separate fact from analysis. (g) I just stated that this kind of writing irks me. I know every author will inject his or her viewpoint into each work in some way, but Tomalin's viewpoint is so "loud" in places that I sometimes wished she'd tone it down. That's all. In many parts, her writing style is lovely, and I did say I enjoyed the book. Again, it was just MHO. :-)
