I went back to the second hand store, and there it was! It is a Signet Classic edition, reissued with a new cover at the time of the Glenn Close movie version, but the edition dates from 1962. It is translated by Richard Aldington. Apparently there is another translation available also, but the foreword writer thinks this is better.
I was surprised to discover it was epistolary. I haven't finished it yet, but I don't think Laclos can be described as the French JA - there's just too much sex! Maybe the French Fielding? Tomalin is right, though, to suggest that there are elements of Lady Susan to be found - it must have been an enormously risque book for a teenage JA to be reading. If she did, I don't think there's any doubt she knew about sex.
