Thanks to you both for helping me see this in a different light. I think both of you (Caroline and Clare) have very good points.
First, I had failed to look closely at who was speaking (Isabella) and how that character is portrayed. Her similarities to her father place her in that "don't take too seriously" category. Secondly, I now also realize that the situations are very different in that JA's brother Edward was able to see the family and continue to carry on family relationships where Frank Churchill was essentially kept away from his father. Thirdly, I read it in the spirit that Clare indicated (teasing) and this works for me. Now I could almost picture the family sitting around reading that passage and commenting on how silly Isabella was being since they (the Austen family) knew from first-hand experience how beneficial such an arrangment could turn out to be.
