] Very good post - but I wonder... loving JA as we all do, would you rather she had been able to marry Tom Lefroy, be happy, etc (with the corresponding possibility that she wouldn't write so well), or that she had never met him (and therefore did not suffer from his loss, though at cost to her art). And do you think that if she had married him, she would have gone on to develop her writing, and publish it?



I think that writing was a need of Jane's, that she would have written for her own sake, no matter what turns her life took. And Tom didn't have any money either, so she may have published to gain the extra income.

On the other hand, if she married and had a brood of kids, would she have had the time to write? Might we have even less than we do now?
