I wonder if the mere fact that Jane's father did not mention the name or the sex of the author was a signal to the publisher that he was dealing with a female. If the writer had been a male of some social standing, he wouldn't have had his manuscript submitted anonymously.

It might be like single women using only their initials in the phone book these days- it's usually a dead give away.
