Maybe this was an inside joke with the rest of the family- maybe they had heard enough varations on this theme from neighbors and other relations that they were actually able to tease each other about it??
Because it certainly can not be denied that Edward was MUCH better off because he was adopted by the Knights- and he was able to do more for his mother and sisters because of it. After Mr. Austen dies, the majority of the support comes from Edward. Even though they (the sisters) were treated like poor relations- imagine how much worse off they would have been had he not been taken in by the Knights.
