...that Jane made a good point with that story: societies' rules did not ensure morality. Lady Susan outwardly seemed to comply with all the rules, exhibited excellent manners, played the part of the 'perfect lady' and was deemed acceptable by society, but in reality she was quite cruel. At least I think that's what the young Jane was trying to say and that I believe that was what Claire Tomalin was saying about her. I just wonder what would have resulted if Jane had stuck with that idea and developed it further.
