] Do you think she was basically a calm and sensible woman, like Charlotte Lucas, or a spoiled baggage of a Bertram who ran off with another man?
I loved her reaction while in London, to the news that Hastings had a new love. Get on that ship to India! ;-) But again, when that proved unfeasible, she did what she could to protect her interests by (probably) writing to Hastings and reminding him of his obligations.
And at the end of her life, she seemed to face her illness with great strength and dignity.
I admire the way she took control of her own destiny by decisive action so many times in her life, when faced, seemingly, with no options.
