] I'm about halfway through the Tomalin biography and it seems that Jane Austen is presented as being somehow an unhappy person as an adult. Fearful of being alone, worried about a future as a spinster, vaguely resentfull of her wealthy relatives. Somehow injured in life. This contrasts with the feeling I get from Jane's letters that she was basically a happy well-adjusted person, somewhat like Eliz. Bennet. Anybody else notice this? Perhaps I don't "decode" her letters properly.
