Karen -- only members of the immediate family knew, and if Cassandra told her nieces the name when she told them the story (years later, after Jane Austen's death), they didn't remember it when they wrote it down in the late 19th century...
(Some of the nieces did confuse this Great Unknown with the Revd. Samuel Blackall, but he was a quite different -- and much less romantic -- character.)
