In response to Communication delays, written by Laraine on March 04, 1998 at 16:55:08

] It would have driven me crazy to have relatives living in India (or any other far-flung spot) and have no idea how they were. Philadelphia's husband died and she didn't even know it for 6 months. How utterly awful. I'm sure if you had never conceived of the instant communication we have now, you didn't miss what you'd never had-

Perhaps we, as a community of people to live to communicate instantly would be even more sensitive to this! To me, this makes the idea of sending one's young children away to schools, where epidemics ran rampant it seems, or to be raised in other homes all the more appalling. I can barely convince myself to go out for an evening and leave the kids with someone else, let alone sending them to a place where news of them would be days or months away. Imagine Warren Hastings sending his young son to where news of him (and his eventual death) was six months away!
