and went on to Oxford, she says! That was an incident that impressed me, also. Janet mentioned the possible effect Jane's separation from home might have had; I was struck by Tomalin's convincing arguments regarding Jane's being influenced by her brothers and the other boys boarding there. Austen's somewhat aloof wit can only come from someone who can see life from all sides, and the exposure she got to the adolescent boys' views must have helped.
