I wonder how prevalent was the complete removal of the child from the household during this time.
It seems to have been very 'normal' if not universal. As the biography says, William Cobbett( a social and political commentator) spoke out about the habit. Dierdre Le Fayes' biography of JA also suggests that it wasn't at all unusual. I haven't come accross any particular examples from other families in my reading, but then I haven't read nearly enough yet....
at the same time, it is interesting to note that some portion of JA's talent appears to have been inherited from her mother.
Yes,her mother had quite a talent for verse, didn't she? I love the idea of her writng a poem just to get a boy to come back to school! I wish some of Cassandra's work had survived , too!
