I must admit to being very surprised that JA was farmed out after the initial months of her existence to another location until she "approached the age of reason and became socially acceptable". I am familiar with wet nurses and nannies, but I wonder how prevalent was the complete removal of the child from the household during this time. Considering that this removal as well as being sent to boarding school at an early age could easily account for the emotional distancing from her mother, it is no surprise that some of JA's novels suggest weak, silly, or absent mothers; at the same time, it is interesting to note that some portion of JA's talent appears to have been inherited from her mother.
